My Deep Conditioning Journey

7 years ago if someone asked me if I deep conditioned my hair, I would have responded saying “only when I go to the hairdressers” which wasn’t very often at all!  Looking back 25 years I can’t remember ever having my hair deep conditioned as a child….mum sorry if you are reading this!  What I have come to understand is that our parents were using techniques that were passed down from their parents. Therefore deep conditioning was never a part of my wash day routine. However, having social media has helped to shape how I and we look after our natural hair today.

Why Deep Condition

Deep conditioning is an important part of maintaining moisture in curly hair. In fact as I sit her writing this article I have my hair wrapped up in a t –shirt with a deep conditioning process going on underneath! So what’s big the big deal you ask, why do we need to deep condition.   Deep conditioning helps to:

Maintain and provide moisture to our hair
Helps to keep our hair strong
Provides shine
Increases manageability
Decreases tangles
Promotes curl definition
Promotes healthy hair

Top 5 Deep Conditioners

So here are my top 5 deep conditioners that help do all of the above, they are not in order of preference I love them all the same!

Mahogany Naturals England – Irish Cream Hair Smoothie

A super rich, luxurious hair smoothie that can be used as a weekly indulging deep conditioning treatment for your hair. This deep conditioner smells divine and the scent lasts days after you have conditioned your hair. It is super thick and a little goes a long way which is great as this deep conditioner is pricey that others but don’t let this put you off as this product is high quality and definitely worth the money.

Jessicurl – Deep Conditioning Treatment

It’s a thick, rich, moisturising deep conditioning treatment that does not build up on the scalp. It is the ideal formula for restoring moisture to dry curly hair. This comes in 2 different fragrances plus the option of no fragrance. My favourite is the ‘island fantasy’. When using this deep conditioner I add my own oil mixture to it, I find this helps to add extra moisture to my hair.

Camille Rose – Algae Renew Deep Conditioning Mask

This is an intense super rich deep conditioning treatment infused with blue green algae, antioxidants and biotin. This helps to prevent, thinning, shedding and breakage. The deep conditioner smells like chocolate due to the cocoa and mango butter, it is super smooth and easy to apply to the hair

Bee Mine – Avocado Cream Balanced Conditioner

This nourishing deep conditioner is enriched with pro-vitamins, extracts and proteins that compact the cuticle layer of the hair resulting in nourished hair that isn’t weighed down. This leaves my hair feeling soft and a lot more manageable. If you have been watching NaturalCurliesTV on YouTube from the beginning you would have seen this product in my top 10 favourite natural hair products!

Bentonite Clay

I had to include this into my top 5 conditioners, I know your probably thinking this is more of a hair cleanser than a deep conditioner but you wrong. This amazing clay is definitely all purpose. It acts as a hair cleanser, clarifier, moisturiser and conditioner. It helps to restore health to your hair and scalp and I swear by bentonite clay. If your curls are not cooperating, they are dry and frizzy and you have dry scalp or build up from the use of products this will give your hair its life back. The only disadvantage of using bentonite clay is that it can get quite messy so make sure you have lots of towels at the ready.

Those are my top 5 deep conditioners, if you would like to know my deep conditioning process please check out the video below.
