How to celebrate Black History Month UK this 2018
Black history, African history is alive and hidden in plain sight all around us all year round. Woven into the fabric of our planetary existence.
Black History Month was created by African-American Historian, Carter G. Woodson, and is celebrated in the USA during the month of February.
In the early 20th century, Carter G. Woodson saw that the contributions made by African-Americans to America were not acknowledged. He was particularly concerned for the young growing without knowledge of self, and not seeing the achievements made by their ancestors to American society so much so that he launched a week long celebration acknowledging this.
Carter G. Woodson’s initiative was embraced across North America by organisations and schools so much that he struggled to meet the demand for the course materials.
Today, the legacy of Carter G. Woodson continues, where it is also celebrated during the month of October in the UK, spanning to Germany and Netherlands.
We all know that Black History, African History can be celebrated everyday, but there is power in this month where it allows us to bring focus to our ancestral heritage. It allows us to pay homage to our ancestors and restore community relations through education and group economics, to supporting many charity organisations who are driven by creating better and more accessible resources for the community.
And as (BHM) Black History Month joins us again for 2018, we’d like to share with you some of the events that are taking place from the 1st – 31st October 2018 that many individuals and organisations have put together.
