This is one of the most popular questions I get “how do you get your hair to grow so long?”
So to compliment the popular YouTube video on Naturalcurliestv ‘ how to grow long healthy natural hair’ I thought it was about time to share a blog post.
I have been natural all my life but it wasn’t until 2010 when I started to get serious and manifest natural hair growth into my life. Part of the manifestation process was to take control of my hair and learn what it liked and didn’t like, this was achieved by a lot of trail and error. I am certain that what I am about to share with you will work because these key practices have helped me achieve the longest hair I have ever had in my life!
Regular Hair Cleansing
Your scalp is an extension of the skin on your face. Would we not cleanse our face on a regular basis? In fact many of us have a morning and evening skin care routine filled with lots of products to beautify our skin. So I am not saying we need to wash our hair twice daily that would be of no benefit and too much hard work for us curly girls. What I do suggest is getting into routine of cleansing your scalp at least once a week. This will remove any build up and sweat for your scalp so your hair will not have to struggle to grow.
when I deep condition my hair I notice such a difference. My hair feels softer and looks so much healthier basically like it has been given it’s life back! Deep conditioning is so important because it; prevents damage, helps with moisturising, makes our hair nice a flexible and adds shine and luster. Deep condition regularly and your hair will thank you for it and you will begin to see the results you want.
Before I started my journey to healthy natural hair I thought moisturising was applying grease to dry hair. My hair would appear shiny and healthy after use, but that was a fake shine. Just to let you in on a little secret; healthy curly hair does not shine but it does have a sheen which reflects quite nicely in the light. Curly hair is more likely to get dry because of the twist and turns of the hair strand. The natural oils that are produced by the scalp called sebum find it really difficult to reach the ends of the hair unfortunately causing dryness. This is why it is so important for us curly girls to remoisturise on a regular basis especially concentrating on the ends of the hair as it is the oldest and most fragile part our hair.
Low manipulation styling
I am a big advocate of low manipulation styling as this is what helped to grow my natural hair long….and the points that I mentioned. When I started my journey to healthy natural I began my styling my hair in twists and mini braids and regular braids this help with length retention I was not having to manipulate my hair on a daily basis. Doing this I decreased unnecessary hair breakage and shedding. Protective styling is something I continue to do even with my hair the length it is because I want to retain as much length as possible
On my journey to healthy natural hair I became frustrated at times as I thought my hair was never going to grow. What I noticed was that before I noticed any real growth I noticed health. When my hair became healthy my hair grew inches upon inches. I would urge you in your journey to natural hair, to focus on the health, begin to implement all of the above, have patience and you will see the growth you want!
