Best Detanglers for Natural Hair

Best Detanglers for Natural Hair | Natural Curlies
No matter where your hair sits on the hair-type scale (as created by Oprah’s hair stylist Andre Walker, give it a google if this is news to you!!), one thing that we all have in common with our curls is detangling.
Hours of our life spent in front of the mirror with an array of brushes and combs trying to be ever so gentle whilst simultaneously losing patience.
Eye roll. We’ve all been there. Although this 1-on-1 time with our hair is a good way to blaze through a whole season of Suits on Netflix, it shouldn’t have to be a dreaded exercise. When I first started my hair journey back in 2013 somebody told me that detangling afro hair is like being a celeb and having to deal with the paparazzi – it’s there all the time but it’s part of your lifestyle so you have to learn to live with it and make it work in your favour, if anything!
So here it is, from me to you, a short list of my own favourite detanglers that are sure to give you the slip you need in order to treat your tresses with the love and luxury they deserve without the excessive time commitments!
Raw Shea Butter Moisturizing Detangler
The Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Extra-Moisture Detangler is packed with argan oil and shea butter to provide a restorative softening treatment to ensure that you get the right slip to avoid breakage. Although their prices may seem a bit high in the high street stores, they offer a 15% off deal on your first purchase from their website – bargain!

Find that your curls don’t shine even after a deep moisturising? I’m with you sis! To help us with our dwindling sparkle is the BLACK VANILLA MOISTURE & SHINE HAIR SMOOTHIE by Carol’s Daughter. Packed with sunflower, olive, almond and buriti oils with some aloe leaf, soy and B vitamins for good measure, this cruelty-free smoothie will absorb quickly into the hair’s cuticle to provide that extra shine after a detangle.

DevaCurl Supercream Coconut Curl Styler hair Cream
DevaCurl’s sulphate and paraben-free range is devoted nourishing and refining those super curly hair types. My favourite of their collection is the DEFINE & CONTROL Supercream Coconut Curl Styler. Although relatively light product compared to other thick and creamy competitors, this styler works a dream when doing a light detangle with your fingers or a Tangle Teezer to get that easygoing tousled look.

Miss Jessie’s Multi-Cultural Curls
Miss Jessie’s Multicultural Curls is designed for the sisters who, like me, have a range of different hair textures in their mane. If you have a mix of 3A-4C hair textures, this will be a great one for you, especially when you want a quick detangle on the go! Use with a Denman brush to define those individual curl types and use a light oil on your ends to seal in moisture.

OUIDAD Curl Immersion Hi-Defining Custard
Ever heard of Ouidad? I was sceptical when I first tested their products but was pleasantly surprised at how sensitive they were to my brittle 4C kinks! Their Curl Immersion Hi-Defining Custard is designed to give us curly girls an easier time when detangling, giving us definition with bouncy softness and juicy juicy twist-outs. Yes, please!

After the usual “I love your hair” comment by those without curly hair there is often the question “Is it hard to manage?”. I’m sure you guys know exactly the conversation I’m talking about here. The answer I always give to this query is no, our hair is not hard to manage once you find what works for you, and the time taken to care for it is a lifestyle choice.
I hope my little list points you in the direction to finding the right choice for your precious curls and to start embracing those pesky paparazzi!
